Thaddaeus Ropac in the Marais welcomes contemporary art icon Alex Katz and reveals some of his recent works in an exhibition called New Landscapes invading the main and first floor of the gallery’s exhibition space. The large scale landscapes that Katz has been painting since the 90’s are well honored on the main floor’s wide exposition room as the first floor unveils landscape sketches and a portrait.

As the exhibition focuses on one aspect of his work, little variety and little quantity is found and I personally was left hungering for more. Alex Katz’s work is instantly recognizable, it may be simple in appearance but don’t fool yourself thinking anyone could do the same as only Katz can produce with such creativity and elegance.

Katz’s work, and this is the case at Thaddaeus Ropac and his recent landscape paintings, is luminous, limpid and moving. By his own admission Alex Katz paints from perception, he paints what he thinks he saw, trying to paint the present tense and this is a very good opportunity to contemplate his sensibility.
